This book, Timmy’s diary of his epic voyage, charts the day-by-day adventure of Donal Dowd and the late Timmy Flavin as they undertook a remarkable circumnavigation of Ireland by kayak in 1991. It provides fascinating insights into the life of an avid adventurer as his restless spirit took him to the seas. The highs and the lows are all revealed in Timmy’s honest and wonderful voice.
Two Boats at the Water’s Edge was published posthumously as a tribute to Timmy by his wife Brid Farrell and their two sons. The idea for this book came to her when she happened upon the handwritten diary of her late husband Timmy and a bunch of old photos of the trip.
All profits from the book are being donated to the Valentia Coast Guard and Cancer Research.
“I never imagined that I would publish a book so when the idea did occur to me in March this year (2019) I had no idea how to go about it. Then I looked at a beautiful book published by the photographer Valerie O’Sullivan and saw that a Siobhán Prendergast in Dingle was her publisher. On the 9th of March I sent her an email half hoping that she would say my idea was ridiculous but instead, within twelve hours, I got a very positive response. My bluff was called!
And from then until the book arrived in my hands five months later it was a most professional and fulfilling journey and one I am very glad I made. At the beginning, Siobhán gave me a breakdown of the costs involved and these did not waver. For me, this was an important consideration as I am donating all the profits to charity.
Siobhán’s dedication, attention to detail, perfectionism all shine through in the book. My ideas and proposals were listened to and her advice was always on hand to enhance the production. She chose the best designs for the book and the finished product is beyond my wildest expectation.
