Services for Authors

“Siobhan offers a truly comprehensive service that shepherds a book-idea from its embryonic stage right through to when the finished product appears on the shelves. This encompassed all the big items like sourcing a suitable editor, designer and printer right down to the tiniest like how to get an ISBN number.

For a beginner, this was a great reassurance that a book project, once started, would indeed be brought to completion and it would be done well. In fact, ‘excellence’ was a by-word that characterised all stages of the process, a striving to achieve a professional standard in every aspect of producing a book.

The two way model for paying for the service—a flat fee or an hourly rate—was another important reassurance that costs would not explode, and that a reasonable estimate of the total outlay could be pinned down before one gives a green light to the whole project.

Siobhan was constantly available throughout the process and was well able to negotiate the inevitable hiccups along the road, knowing when to keep up pressure to meet deadlines and when to accommodate changes.”

Is your book completed? We know how long it can take to write a book and the emotional investment that an author must make. Who said writing was easy? It is certainly not as any writer knows. Before a word is written, hours of thought and creativity have been expended, along with possibly years of experience. This followed by months, or more likely, years of work trying to write the book you have held in your head for so long. Now you want to make your book the best book that it can be. Let us help you.

Submit your book

There are many wonderful publishing companies out there publishing all manner of books from literature to crime to non-fiction. You must decide which ones are for you and how to approach them. Let us help you with this. [two distinct sections]

Submit your book to a publisher
Many authors want their book to be taken on by a traditional publishing house. To do this you should submit a cover letter, details about you the author, a synopsis of the book and last but not least a sample chapter. All of these elements must be carefully considered and crafted before you contact a publisher. You will get one shot at it; make it a good one. We can help you to master the craft of direct submission and help you to find the publishers that are suitable for your book.

Find an agent
Without a doubt having an agent is a huge advantage to any author. While they will charge a fee, usually a set commission once the book has been placed with a publisher, most publishers will take notice of submissions that come in from agents. Of course agents are selective about which authors they take on so your approach to them must be right. As you would with a publisher you will need to submit a cover letter, details about you the author, a synopsis of the book and a carefully chosen sample chapter. You will also need to approach the right agent for you and your book. We can help you with this.

  • Copy-editing Copy-editing takes the text and makes it ready for publication. A copy-edit consists of correcting not alone grammar and spelling but also includes standardising capitalisation, punctuation, style and syntax for consistency and flow. It does not consist of re-writing or changing the text in any substantive way. The aim is to ensure that whatever appears in public is accurate and easy to follow and free of error, inconsistency and repetition. This process picks up mistakes, ambiguities and anomalies, alerts you to possible legal problems. To enquire about copy-editing, just drop us a line at info@dinglepublishing.com
  •

  • Proofreading Proofreading is a quality check and a tidy-up. A copy-edit must be done before proofreading. A proofreader looks for consistency in usage and presentation, and accuracy in text, images and layout, but cannot be responsible for the author or copy-editor’s work.To enquire about proofreading, just drop us a line at info@dinglepublishing.com
  •

  • Indexing An index is essential to almost any non-fiction book. It is an ordered arrangement of entries, designed to enable users to locate information in a document. They are often the first point of reference for the reader, and will be the most efficient route to finding specific information in the book. The skill of indexing lies in analysing the document, identifying indexable terms and concepts, and creating appropriate headings. Document types that may require an index include legal or medical texts, academic journals, and books for the general reader or school textbooks. Design

Design
Readers have become accustomed to beautifully designed books. Why do some books look and read better than others? What is it that gives them the edge? It’s simple – good design.

    • Cover Design
The cover of your book is important because it is the first thing a reader sees. In addition it can be a vital way to publicise or market your book. You’ll want it to have a design that grabs their attention and portrays an accurate idea of what your book is about. At Dingle Publishing Services we work with a small number of professional designers who, with as much or as little input from you the author, will design a beautiful and market-appropriate cover for your book. As well as designing the cover we will create a barcode from the ISBN for your book.

    • What is a barcode?
Your book cover will need a unique barcode. The barcodes found on the back of books are called Bookland EAN or EAN-13 barcode symbols. The EAN barcode is created from the ISBN for the book. Although the EAN barcode is much like that used for general retail merchandise, the numbering system used to generate the barcode for books is different.

    • What is an ISBN?
ISBN is the acronym for International Standard Book Number. This 10- or 13-digit number identifies a specific book, an edition of a book, or a book-like product (such as an audiobook). Since 1970 each published book has a unique ISBN. In 2007, assigned ISBNs changed from 10 digits to 13. To enquire about cover design, just drop us a line at info@dinglepublishing.com

Case Study

The MacGillycuddy’s Reeks

“I never imagined that I would publish a book so when the idea did occur to me in March this year (2019) I had no idea how to go about it. Then I looked at a beautiful book published by the photographer Valerie O’ Sullivan and saw that a Siobhán Predergast in Dingle was her publisher. On the 9th of March I sent her an email half hoping that she would say my idea was ridiculous but instead, within twelve hours, I got a very positive response. My bluff was called!

And from then until the book arrived in my hands five months later it was a most professional and fulfilling journey and one I am very glad I made. At the beginning, Siobhán gave me a breakdown of the costs involved and these did not waver. For me, this was an important consideration as I am donating all the profits to charity.

Siobhán’s dedication, attention to detail, perfectionism all shine through in the book. My ideas and proposals were listened to and her advice was always on hand to enhance the production. She chose the best designs for the book and the finished product is beyond my wildest expectation.

The book has been a wonderful success, Fergal Keane of RTÉ described it as “a magnificent publication”. I would encourage anyone who is thinking of publishing to contact Siobhán, her opinion is valuable and honest.

The best of luck and already I’m thinking of my next book!
